How's the Weather in Yunnan in December?
Yunnan in December is not too cold overall. Except for high-altitude areas like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Shangri-La, where winter temperatures can be quite low and a down jacket is necessary, most destinations have cool to pleasantly warm weather.
In places like Dali, Lijiang, and Kunming, mornings and evenings can be chilly, so a sweater with a coat is recommended. Once the sun comes out, it quickly feels warm, and you can comfortably take off your outer layers.
The further south you go, the warmer it gets. In regions like Pu'er and Xishuangbanna, light clothing such as T-shirts with a thin jacket is usually enough.
December is also one of the driest months in Yunnan, with very little rain (typically just 1–2 days). Most days are sunny and clear.

1. Kunming, Dali & Lijiang
These three destinations are great to visit year-round, but coming in December gives you a few special highlights you won't see at other times of the year.
One of the biggest highlights is the winter cherry blossoms. At Wuliang Mountain, the blossoms are in full bloom from mid-December to early January, lasting around 25 days.

At Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the summit has a thicker snow cover, increasing the chance of seeing the famous "golden sunrise" on the peaks. You can also head to Jiaozi Snow Mountain near Kunming to enjoy snowy landscapes and even try snow activities.

Around Erhai Lake, you can capture beautiful moments of sunlight filtering through redwood trees as seagulls glide over the water. In Dianchi Lake, especially along Haigeng Dam, feeding seagulls is a popular and memorable experience.
Erhai LakeIf you happen to be here at the end of the year, there are also festive New Year experiences to enjoy. In Kunming, parks like Haigeng Park and Daguan Park host lively New Year markets. In the old towns of Dali and Lijiang, you can join New Year's Eve celebrations with bonfire parties, traditional Naxi dance performances, fireworks, and countdown events.

2. Jingmai Mountain
One of the main reasons we recommend visiting Jingmai Mountain in December is the incredibly comfortable weather. It's warm but not hot—T-shirts with a light jacket and long pants are usually enough—and you can expect sunny days almost every day.
This kind of weather brings spectacular scenery. In Jingmai, you can often see a stunning sea of clouds, almost every day. From the viewing platform at Jingmai Village, you'll have wide-open views, perfect for enjoying the clouds with a cup of coffee in hand.

Jingmai Mountain is also the world's first UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to tea culture. With such pleasant weather, it's the perfect place for a light walk through ancient tea forests, as well as exploring nearby ethnic villages, where you can experience traditional architecture, local food, and cultural life at a slower pace.

3. Yuanyang
Yuanyang Rice FieldsDecember is one of the best times to visit the Yuanyang Rice Terraces. In December, you can see the mirror-like rice terraces, a seasonal view unique to winter. Before the rice is planted, the water-filled terraces reflect the blue sky and the colors of sunrise and sunset, creating a stunning multicolored landscape.
You could enjoy the sunrise at Duoyishu Village and then hike from Duoyishu to Azheke, which is more authentic and less touristy.
Laohuzui Terraced Field Scenic Area is the best place for a sunset. In Yuanyang, besides admiring the terraces, you could also visit the local markets and explore Hani villages to experience the unique local culture.

4. Tengchong
Imagine soaking in a warm hot spring, hidden deep in the mountains, letting the heat melt away the winter chill and the fatigue from your journey.
For a quiet half hour, you can unwind in the warm water with your partner, family, or friends, as steam rises around you and everything begins to slow down.
This is exactly why we recommend Tengchong in December. Known for its natural hot springs, the colder weather makes the experience even more enjoyable and memorable.

- For central and northern Yunnan (Kunming, Dali, Lijiang): a coat with a sweater or sweatshirt, a knit hat, and a scarf. These will keep you warm and also look great in photos around the old towns.
- For high-altitude areas (e.g., Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Shangri-La): a down jacket, thick pants, scarf, and gloves are necessary.
- For outdoor hiking: trekking poles, a waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, and a windproof face mask.
Other Essentials:
- December in Yunnan tends to be dry, so bring moisturizer and lip balm.
- UV levels can be strong, so sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended.

1. Is Shangri-La recommended in December if I want to see snow-capped mountains?
Shangri-La is not recommended in December. The main reasons are the cold weather and the higher risk of altitude sickness. This is especially important if you're traveling with elderly family members or young children.
Besides the snow-capped mountains and Songzanlin Monastery, most highland landscapes—like lakes and grasslands—aren't very scenic at this time. If your goal is to see snow and sunrise-gilded peaks, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang can already meet that desire.
